Luis Hernan, an artist and researcher at the University of Newcastle in the UK, in his project “Digital Ethereal “has invented a device called the Kirlian Device that was named after the Semyon Davidovich Kirlian a Russian inventor who discovered Kirlian photography. Kirlian photography is a technique used to capture electrical discharges that are not visible to naked eyes.

Luis Hernan with his Kirlian Device brings out the Wi –Fi network visible. The device measures the properties of Wi-Fi signals in its immediate locality and then translates the signals into LED colors from red through to blue. The results are stunning with fantastic shapes and multi-colored streaks of light curling and wrapping each other in spaces thus presenting how they surround people and objects. Hernan mentioned that red lights indicate strong signals while the blue light indicates weaker signals.

As the user of the device moves to different places picking up various signals the screen of the device also changes. Long-exposure camera is used by Hernan as he walks around with the device to get these ethereal images or “wireless spectres” as he names them. The images by Hernan show vision of Wi-Fi signals swirling and sweeping around in brightly colored rays.

When looking at the pictures given by Hernan it shows clearly that due to brightness of the device and the process lasting for several minutes the human picture gets ghosted away.

A free Kirlian Device App for Android devices has also been designed by Hernan just to enable people to create their own images and experience how Wi-Fi devices surround them. He also mentioned that these images taken by him were just for his research purpose. He had hung the mobile phones from the ceiling of the room that showed how signal strength was unstable as people moved around.

With this device not only Luis Hernan is thrilled but also are we to see what is surrounding us as we move, probably signals and networks.
